The Last of Us Part 2 on PC: strategies to win in No Turning Back mode

The arrival of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC, marked the title's official debut on PC. Among the new features of the version, which includes graphical improvements, improved performance and new content, the No Turning Back mode stands out — a roguelike experience that requires tactical attention, combat mastery and intelligence in resource management.

This new mode moves away from the linear narrative and immerses the player in unpredictable combats, with no room for error. Progress is discarded at the end of each attempt, and each round is different from the last. Understanding how this system works is the first step for those who want to explore everything the game has to offer.

What is No Return Mode and how does it work?

No Turning Back pits the player against five consecutive confrontations, with increasing difficulty and a boss at the end. The scenario, enemy faction and modifiers vary each round. There are no save points, and death immediately ends accumulated progress.

Planning is therefore essential. Before starting the round, the player can consult a planning board with all available confrontations. The options do not follow a linear order: after the first and third confrontations, it will be necessary to choose between two different paths. The choice directly affects the type of enemy faced, the map and the items obtained.

The variety of situations makes each round unique. Choosing paths and analyzing available rewards help to develop more effective strategies. Players who prefer stealth can avoid encounters with infected, for example, while those who prefer direct combat can seek out maps with more open confrontations.

Character choice impacts performance

Each character in No Turning Back offers a specific playstyle, with their own weapons, abilities, and bonuses. At the beginning, only Ellie and Abby are available. Other characters are unlocked by completing specific challenges.

Ellie, with her balanced style and supplement bonuses, is ideal for beginners. Abby excels in melee combat, with health recovery after eliminations. Dina makes crafting items easier, Jesse focuses on resources, Tommy dominates from a distance with the rifle, while Joel is more resistant and efficient in physical attacks.

Other names like Lev, Yara, Mel, and Manny expand the possibilities. Each one has unique advantages, like Lev and his silent bow, Yara with an AI-controlled ally, or Manny with great firepower but limited health recovery. Knowing the characteristics of each character is essential to define an effective approach.

Crafting and Upgrading: How to Use Resources Smartly

Collecting materials and knowing how to use them can determine your survival. During battles, it is common to find ammunition and crafting items around the map. However, crafting equipment in the middle of combat can compromise your efficiency.

The safehouse, between rounds, provides a safer environment for adjustments. There, the player can access the Trading Post, where weapons and supplies are sold with varying stocks. Characters like Jesse have an advantage here, with increased access to the stockpile. The choice between using rags and alcohol for medkits or Molotov cocktails, for example, should be made based on the next phase.

The improvement tree, which varies depending on the character, also requires quick decisions. Investing in stealth, direct combat or support will depend on the playstyle adopted and the composition of the following confrontations.

Rhythm and caution are worth more than speed

While the game does judge performance based on criteria like timing and accuracy, No Turning Back doesn't reward rushing. With exceptions like Capture mode, which imposes a time limit on opening safes, most encounters allow for a more careful approach.

Caution offers two benefits: preserving health and maximizing resources. Taking advantage of moments between enemy waves to explore the map or complete optional challenges, such as Wagers and Dropped Items, can yield valuable items and advantages for future encounters.

These side quests require specific actions, such as eliminating enemies with specific weapons or luring infected into traps. Completing them offers rewards that cannot be obtained otherwise, such as new recipes or extra money.

Training with personalized sessions

For those who want to master the No Turning Back mode, the game offers customizable sessions. You can adjust the difficulty level, activate or deactivate modifiers, and even limit the factions that will appear. Modifiers, in turn, drastically alter the experience — from invisible enemies to incendiary effects on melee attacks.

Accessibility options also help to calibrate the difficulty. Features like invisibility while crawling and reduced enemy perception can make the game more accessible without compromising immersion.

Extra content extends longevity

In addition to traditional matchups, No Turning Back mode includes daily challenges and unlockable costumes, which encourages constant return to the game. Daily Sessions offer unique challenges with specific rewards and rotating rules, keeping the mode active and unpredictable.

The addition of this mode to the PC version reinforces the title's appeal among veterans and new players alike. Rather than simply following the narrative thread, The Last of Us Part II Remastered expands its universe with challenging mechanics and systems that require technical mastery.

Even for those who already know Joel and Ellie's story, No Turning Back mode represents a new level of complexity and challenge — turning each attempt into a new journey of survival.
